Soft footsteps behind him
He heard the footsteps getting louder and louder, almost as if they were right behind him. With every heartbeat, his fear became more palpable. The open door was his only chance. He reached for the doorknob, quietly pulled the door open and slipped inside, the adrenaline making him tremble with excitement. The darkness swallowed him as he closed the door behind him and held his breath. Inside it was quiet, almost eerie. He leaned against the wall, listening. The footsteps outside paused briefly before continuing, as if the pursuer was unsure which way to go.
His heartbeat calmed a little, but he knew he wasn't safe yet. Slowly, he let his eyes adjust to the darkness and faintly made out the outline of a narrow corridor. He crept on, ever vigilant, constantly glancing back to make sure no one was following him. The corridor led to a staircase that seemed to lead down into a cellar. Did he have a choice? He had no time to think. With no other options to descend, he made his way down.
The steps creaked under his feet as he descended deeper into the darkness. Every movement felt like it could betray him, but he had to keep going. The pursuer had almost caught him, but perhaps he would lose him now. Once at the bottom, he found himself in a cold, damp room with only a faint source of light shining through a crack in the ceiling. He could barely see what was in front of him, but he knew he had to keep going. Further and further. Because now was his only chance to escape - and survive.
He continued to move carefully through the damp room, each step a balancing act between haste and caution. His senses were heightened, every sound, every rustle gave him pause. Suddenly he noticed another narrow passageway on the opposite side of the room. Was this the escape he was looking for? But before he could decide, he heard a noise behind him - a soft cracking sound, as if someone had taken the same path. Time was running out and his options were dwindling. He had to act now, before it was too late.
Night in one of these narrow alleys
His heart pounded in his chest as he decided to flee through the narrow passageway. The footsteps behind him grew louder and he knew his pursuer was getting closer. With one last quick glance behind him, he took off running. The narrow passageway led into a dark, damp alley that seemed even more threatening than the previous one. The cold of the cobblestones penetrated his shoes, but he couldn't stop. He sensed that his pursuer was close behind him, almost as if he could feel his breath on his neck. There was no turning back. He had to decide - run further into the darkness or try to hide somewhere and hope that the darkness would swallow him up. But just as he thought he had lost his pursuer, a faint source of light flashed in front of him. An exit to save him? Or a trap? Fractions of a second decided his fate.

As he approached the faint light, he realized that it was not an exit, but a flickering street lamp illuminating a small, deserted square. His hope faded, but he could not stand still. He quickly decided to take cover behind an old well in the hope that his pursuer would run past him. The footsteps came closer and he held his breath. The silhouette of a man emerged, searched, hesitated - and finally moved on. He had made it. At least for the moment, he was safe.
As the footsteps faded, he breathed a sigh of relief. The pursuer had not spotted him. He remained motionless for a few more minutes to make sure the danger had passed. Then he carefully emerged from his hiding place. With one last glance at the dark passageway, he decided to leave the neighborhood for good. This time he would not make another mistake. He would take the prey to safety and disappear, forever. The night was still young, and he had already won. His heartbeat calmed as he quietly disappeared into the darkness.
